Unhappy Prognosticating Situations

Sometimes, as a prognosticator enters the final four of the tournament, he or she finds him or herself in a situation that is most unfortunate. That being where they have zero final four teams correct, and their current point total equals their maximum point total.

This results in an especially unhappy feeling during the final four games, as the prognosticator can only wonder how many prognosticators will pass him or her in the standings.

Please issue your condolences via a comment to this post to our own Deputy Pooh-Bah Dan Sipes, who with 28 points in the 'Ganza and zero final four teams, finds himself in that unhappy situation.

The Prognosticators Have Spoken

The poll on the 'Ganza scoring method is closed, with results indicating that the majority of prognosticators do not want to change the scoring points as proposed in the post below. Of course, we realize on-line polls aren't the most scientific things in the world. That being said, based on the votes and the comments, there was not an overwhelming desire to change things.

The Brass could have gone either way, confident that either system results in a legitimate Hoister of the Coveted Ostertag Plaque. The "new" way would possibly have made things a little more exciting at the end, what with rewarding larger point values. The "old" way, while difficult to gain ground, does require that the 'Ganza Champion be a consistent prognosticator. One must score well in all rounds to hoist the plaque!

In the end, tradition wins out, and the Brass will keep the scoring system the way it is. We sincerely appreciate all the comments received and the thoughtfulness behind the posts and the votes.

Scoring Method Poll

Prognosticators across the wide world have often complained about the 'Ganza scoring system. Most often these complaints come soon after a particular prognosticator has come very close to winning the Ostertag Plaque, but has lost.

Over the years, the Brass has considered changing our system. We have been open minded about the prospect but for the fact that we have many years of data and statistics, and if we changed the scoring method we were unsure of how to reflect that in our statistics.

But this year, to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, the Brass are seriously considering changing things up a bit. Not changing our patented "'Ganza Style" system, where one is awarded points based on correctly predicting a team's finish, mind you -- that would be sacrilege. Rather, we are contemplating changing the VALUE of each round's points. Various suggestions have been received over the years, most recently by veteran Prognosticator Dan Ginsburg last year. Dan suggested we change the point values to equalize the value of points available throughout the 'Ganza, rather than having point totals weighted toward the first rounds. This makes sense to us, and we offer the following change for your consideration.

CURRENTLY the point system is as follows:

First Round: 32 teams x 1 point = 32 points
Second Round: 16 teams x 2 points = 32 points

Third Round: 8 teams x 3 points = 24 points
Fourth Round: 4 teams x 4 points = 16 points

Final Four Round: 2 teams x 5 points = 10 points
Runner up: 1 team x 6 points = 6 points
Champion: 1 team x 7 points = 7 points

As you can see, our current system is heavily weighted toward the beginning rounds, with almost 70 percent of the total points available awarded in the first three rounds. This makes it difficult to gain ground, even when a prognosticator correctly picks teams in the later rounds, which by most accounts is a more difficult thing to do.

Here is our proposed NEW SCORING SYSTEM, which you can vote on at the right hand side of this blog page:

First Round: 32 teams x 1 point = 32 points
Second Round: 16 teams x 2 points = 32 points

Third Round: 8 teams x 4 points = 32 points
Fourth Round: 4 teams x 8 points = 32 points

Final Four Round: 2 teams x 12 points = 24 points
Runner-up: 1 team x 16 points = 16 points
Champion: 1 team x 24 points = 24 points

This more equalized system awards 64 points for each weekend of tournament play, and allows for prognosticators who do well in the final four to gain more ground on the field. And prognosticating the final four is what the 'Ganza is all about.

So give this some thought and vote on the right. The Brass has decided that there will be only two options in this poll: 1. Keep it the way it is, or 2. Change the method noted above.

A final word regarding the historical stats. The prognosticator favorites -- "wimp factor" and "power rating" will remain unchanged, since the points scored do not affect them. Others, such as averages, records, etc., will be "archived" for the first 25 years of 'Ganza play, and new records will be established based on the new scoring method.

The poll at right will remain open until midnight of February 15, 2009, to give the Deputy Pooh-Bah adequate time to change the scoring software if a change is enacted.

Finally, to maintain the integrity of the 'Ganza (forget about all that stuff about selling the 2008 Ostertag Plaque on E-Bay), we ask that each prognosticator vote only one time. This isn't Chicago politics, after all!

Just a quick note to say that the 2010 'Ganza will be starting up very soon, in spite of the rather auspicious way that we faded out at the end of the 2009 'Ganza. My apologies to 2009 Champion Dustin Ketterling and the rest of our faithful prognosticators.

Wimp Factor to the Rescue

The Sweet 16 in this year's tournament contains only TWO teams seeded higher than 4th: Purdue in the West (a five seed), and Arizona in the Midwest (a twelve seed).

This will likely drive scores of 'Ganza Prognosticators in the same direction of the next Pixar movie that the Pooh-Bah can't wait to see, since we are typically high in the wimp factor category in the 'Ganza.

The first round jinx may just take the year off, with both Patricia Thomas and Bruce Hammersmith in the top two spots on the standings, after leading the pack with 28 points after the first round.

I'm happy to report that, at least for now, I am ahead of both my Brass Counterparts. But as all you veterans know by now, a few games either way can cause drastic changes in the standings.

Great game for sure. Was tough rooting against my old fave the Jayhawks, but not too tough. I was happy to see that we (and yes, I can say "we" because I'm an alum) held our own in our first game on the big stage, forcing one of the best teams in the nation to play an excellent game in order to beat us.

It is with great pride that I announce the happy news that my alma mater, the North Dakota State Bison, have reached the BIG DANCE in their first year of eligibility! I am so proud -- they couldn't've done it without me and my tuition money on which the baskeball program was built all those years ago.

Hey all you lovable 'Ganza Prognosticators. We are (and by "we are" I mean "I am") feverishly working on Vol. 17, No. 1 of the critically acclaimed 'Ganza Gazette. We (and by "we" I mean "I") hope to have it published to the 'Ganza site on Friday, February 27, 2009.

This is going to be a great year for the 'Ganza, without a doubt. It is also going to be another banner year for the Pooh-Bah's favorite basketball teams. As you may recall, the Pooh-Bah's favorite team from the days of his youth growing up in Big 8 country, the UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS JAYHAWKS, won the 2008 National Championship. And this year, watch for the Pooh-Bah's alma-mater, the NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY BISON, to sweep through the Summit League tournament, and on to a national championship in their very first year of eligibility!!!

There it is, all number 1's in the final four. Davidson almost wore the slippers, but Kansas was a little too much.

I stand corrected, the Deputy pointed out that he is doing reasonably well, in fact, he is doing much better than I. Dep, my Director hat is off to you. Good job.

We have a week to argue about who will get in the championship, it should be a very entertaining final 4. Enjoy the Ganza and be ready for a special update from the Pooh.

Wow, I stand corrected, Mr. Curry went OFF on Wisco and little Davidson, with an enrollment of 1700, rolls into the elite 8...and the Ganza is on it!

The Longhorns from Texas polished off the overrated Cardinal from Stanford. So much for the strength of the Pac-10. UCLA is the lone survivor and if they make it to the Final, Carolina will be waiting. All you Tar Heel fans holler at me!

If you haven't noticed, the Brass is once again being held up by the Director and his so-so picks. The Pooh-bah and the dandy Deputy are hanging out in the lower part of the pack. We look at it this way, we want to be all things to all prognosticators. We are also in a very precarious position, if one of us would happen to hoist the Ostertag, some might cry foul. So, we pick poorly and allow you, yes you, our wonderful prognosticators, to fight for the most wonderful award on the web. The beloved Ostertag!

A very funky sweet 16

Well, well, here we are at the Sweet 16. A few major surprises; Davidson, 'Nova, Western Kentucky, and West Virgina...and maybe a bit of s surprise, all the number 1's are still in.

We are getting closer to crowning a new Ostertag hoister. Our current leader, Kingsley Bailey, a neighbor from beautiful British Columbia, will have his name on the leader board through Wednesday. With Duke being his champ, it doesn't look like Mr. Bailey will be there very long. Jake Kubik, from the Pooh-bah's favorite football state of Nebraska, is right there sharing the lead with Kingsley. However, his Davidson pick to win it all could come crumbling down, as Mr. Flowers from Wisconsin is a defensive specialist and will most likely put the clamp on Mr. Curry from Davidson.

After the completion of today's games, it would seem that Deputy Pooh's own kin is leading the Ganza. In fact, the top 3 in the Ganza standings all hail from North Dakota. They can sure pick'em out there in the upper Midwest. Tomorrow will be interesting as the leader board will shuffle yet again.

UCLA was less than stellar against those tenacious Aggies, yet they did what they had to do to win it. There were many outstanding games today, the tournament is proving to be a classic. And once again, the Ganza is right there in the middle of it all. Hey, have any of you helped choose a color for the Ganza T-shirt yet? We need your opinion.

I am very happy to report that I am writing this in good health. Pooh survived several hours on the slopes. Upon return I needed a few advil to soothe my aching muscles. Then I happened to look at the 'Ganza standings, and I needed a few more advil.

Someday I will finish in the top of the standings...someday I will make Bill and Dan know what it feels to be me looking up at the rest of the Brass...someday I will hoist the coveted Ostertag Plaque. But in the immortal words of Aragorn son of Arathorn prior to the battle at the Black Gate in The Return of the King..."It is not this day."

I have been so busy carving up the slopes, that I haven't been able to watch any games.... Just as well.

Happy Easter and good luck as the Sweet 16 gets finalized!

Well, Duke is gone.

Some of you picked Duke because you are a "heart fan," or you are a prognosticator that has no clue what you are doing and you picked Duke because, they are...well...Duke, Now your bracket is in peril.

Just a reminder, don't ever pick a team because they are "your" team. I learn that lesson every year; and don't pick a team because they are a team you are familiar with, like Duke. For instance, who is Siena? I don't know. I picked them because I am a semi-skilled prognosticator that always finishes in the middle of the pack ahead of my fellow Brass; the Pooh-bah and the Deputy.

You know what, don't listen to me, I have no idea what I am doing.

Go get another plate of nachos and an ice cold beverage and enjoy more games. Isn't the Ganza just the best online prognosticating site on the web? (shameless plug)

Anyway, I am waiting for the pooh blahg to light up with confident prognosticators.

Actually as I write this I'm only at about 7,500 feet, here at the resort in Big Sky MT. I will be approaching the lofty elevation tomorrow as I "shred the corduroy" (that's ski-dude speak for skiing). Big Sky is the official ski resort of the 'Ganza, except that they don't know that yet and they aren't paying us anything for me to say that.

Anyway, it seems we are well on our way to another exciting 'Ganza. There are some high scores being posted, and with over 300 prognosticators, we could see near record scores again this year. Too bad mine won't be among them.

I officially hate the following teams: Arizona, Baylor, U Conn, Kentucky, Drake, Temple, and Kent State. I may add others to the list as the days progress.

Well, it would seem that the younger director is leading the pack at this point. In an interview with the Director Sr, the Director Jr had this to say, "Your job isn't very secure is it?" I received a voice mail from the skiing Pooh-bah, who said, "Your job isn't very secure is it?" Whatever.

Anyway, raise your hand if you are tired of picking Arizona to make it out of the 1st round? Sheesh.

Well, UNLV just beat the puddin out of Kent State. I listened to all the hype about Kent State possibly making it to the Sweet 16. Way to go Dickie V, thanks a ton for the "advice." Oh well, I have Kansas moving on in the Midwest bracket anyway. That's right, a number 1! Deal with it.

Well, it's been a pretty ordinary day at the Ganza office. The Pooh-bah just blew open my door and said, "I'm going skiing!" Much to the surprise, yet pleasantly, of the Deputy and myself. We are going to P-a-r-t-a-y.

Anyway, I have been getting some grief about picking number ones all the way to the Final Four. I know, it has never been done, but this will be the first year. I know it, I just know it. At least I am already ahead of the Pooh-bah, so there.

I am feeling pretty good, I submitted my picks and am now just going to sit back and think of witty answers to the Pooh-bah's questions while being interviewed for the Ganza Champ article, all the while hoisting the coveted Ostertag.

Enough about me, how are you all feeling about your picks? The Pooh-bah reported early that we already had our 100 guests submit their brackets. Let me say, welcome to all of you new prognosticators. The ganza will limit the number of hours you sleep, it will put your job in jeopardy. You will be at the ganza site looking for updates to your wimp factor, your TPP, and your power rating. Go easy on the fatty foods and heavily sugared beverages.

For my final four I have North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis and UCLA. The Championship will be the Tar Heels and the Tigers. The Tar Heels will win 71-66.

North Carolina won a squeaker.

UCLA and Memphis rolled.

And we have some newbies...Portland State coached by my friend, Ken Bone. American, they showed a solid effort in their conference championship, and the winner, in the "we-have-never-been-here-before-but-our-university-name-is-really-long," category is... Ganza Prognosticators let me introduce to you the, University of Maryland Baltimore County.

I was thinking about the #1 seeds I just listed in an earlier post...I forgot to say something about Tennessee. They are tough and they have a very strong RPI. Sorry Pooh-bah, but Kansas may not get that #1 seed and be relegated to a 2 or 3, giving way for a very strong Vols team.

This will procure some very stern looks from the Pooh-bah in the halls of Ganza HQ...

I feel like a little kid getting ready for the Ganza. I can't wipe the "I want to win the Ostertag" smile off my face. I am currently watching the Florida State/North Carolina game. Carolina looks so good, great "d," very solid offense and are 9 deep. A very good pick. I think the top seeds will be, North Carolina, UCLA, Memphis and Kansas. That is my first prognosticating of the season.

I am sure you are beginning to size teams up; watch the conference tournaments this weekend to get a glimpse of who's who. Remember, look at the all important RPI, that will, and should determine who will advance in your bracket. Of course, if you want to lower your wimp factor (see http://www.ganza.com), pick a lower seed for the always exciting upset.

The Brass

In talks with the Pooh bah and the Deputy, it looks as if the brass will convene in Bismarck, ND for the semi-kinda-annual strategy meeting. These meetings can only happen once in awhile because of the intensity and scope of the issues that will be covered. On the agenda is a discussion about the existential questions that plague the Ganza every year. Questions like, "Does it matter if you pick a 16 seed to win a particular region, does it matter?" or "There is only one winner anyway, so who cares if its a young girl from a midwest state that set a scoring record. Who cares that you have been in the Ganza for 17+ years and you have never hoisted the Ostertag plaque, who cares?"

It will be an epic meeting. We will blahg all of the action.

If you have not been watching college hoops this season, let me catch you up on some of the action. There have only been 3 teams to be at number 1 this year, and they all have been relegated to lower positions. Last Saturday, Tennessee knocked off then number 1 Memphis. Tonight, Vanderbilt knocked off #1 Tennessee. North Carolina was a number 1 for most of the season, until they were bumped off by Maryland. It has been an exciting year.

I want to help you compete in the Ganza, so here are a few tips when making your picks. (Just because I have never won the Ostertag doesn't mean I don't have any credibility, so get off my back). Ahem, sorry about that. Anyway...

1. Look at teams in the power conferences. The Pac-10, ACC, and Big 12. Any of those teams are good picks to go deep.

2. Look at the team's RPI (Rating Percentage Index). Basically, that indicates how tough a schedule they play. For instance, a team like Gonzaga has been a good pick because they play such a tough schedule outside of thier conference. That makes them tough come tourney time. (note: The Zags aren't that strong of a pick this year).

3. Don't pick like the Pooh-bah or Deputy.

Do your homework, and you may hoist the Ostertag plaque. Ah March!

Here is a picture of the young Director hanging out with Coach Tony Bennett of the esteemed Washington State Cougars. This was the young Director's "interview" for his future with the Cougs. The Pooh bah had this to say at the annual media day in Ganza HQ:

"I am looking forward to the young Director playing for the Cougs. It is with great anticipation for me to be at his side every step of the way. After all, the Ganza has given him a platform."

The young director responded, "Yes thank you Pooh bah. Too bad my Dad wasn't here to enjoy the moment."

Hello Prognosticators,

After a brief hiatus, one in which I was actually doing some undercover investigating for the Ganza, I am back.

It looks as if the "Ah, March" fever is starting to heat up. If you have taken a look at the latest polls you can see from top to bottom, there is not one clear favorite. I have been watching games all season, and I think anyone can beat anyone at any time.

Here is the latest AP, I will give a brief opinion after each team. I hope this will help you in your picks and raise your wimp factors.

1. Memphis 21-0 - athletic, quick and vulnerable to a good half court team like NC.
2. Duke 19-1 - ACC experience, and a great shooting team, good pick.
3. North Carolina 21-1 - shown some vulnerability to pressure teams.
4. Kansas 21-1 - Monster, will surprise a lot of people
5. UCLA 20-2 - Have seen a lot of this team, they are super dangerous.
6. Georgetown 18-2 - Big East is ok, but no ACC or PAC-10.
7. Tennessee 19-2 - A lot like Memphis, saw them in Seattle, very fast.
8. Wisconsin 18-3 - Big 10 tough guys, pound the inside and are strong.
9. Stanford 18-3 - PAC 10 is tough, these guys are very beatable though
10. Butler 19-2 - A good mid-conference team, they are a good upset pick.
11. Michigan State 19-3 - always there, but very vulnerable.
12. Texas 17-4 - Athletic and inexperienced, but good talent.
13. Xavier 18-4 - Maybe a sweet 16, maybe.
14. Indiana 18-3 - I like this team, they can get to the 16, maybe 8.
15. Drake 20-1 - ummm, have no clue.
16. Marquette 16-4 - Good team, lots of pressure.
17. Washington State 17-4 - They are small, good D and will surprise many.
18. Texas A&M 18-4 - very athletic, I think they will be out the first round.
19. Connecticut 16-5 - Dangerous, they have beaten some good teams, dark horse.
20. Kansas State 15-5 - second round and done.
21. Pittsburgh 17-5 - they lost their best guy, good team. Don't pick them deep.
22. Notre Dame 16-4 - Whatever.
23. Vanderbilt 18-4 - Could surprise if they get in a lesser region.
24. Purdue 17-5 - ummm, no.
25. Saint Mary's 18-3 - WCC is getting better but these guys are no Cindy Zags.

I will try to get to the rest of the teams later this week.

2008 'Ganza T-Shirt Color Scheme

Dearest Prognosticators,

As you are all well aware, each year we here at BGP Enterprises toil over what colors to pick for the annual 'Ganza T-Shirt. Actually, we don't usually toil that much -- we just pick whatever the Pooh-Bah wants. Although some years input is received from The First Lady (the 2006 Bismarck High School colors), the Pooh-Bah's daughters, and even individual prognosticators (the 2007 tye-die suggested by David Richert).

This year Pooh has a few ideas, one being a forest green with a nice looking text color. Another is purple and gold (or is it yellow?) to cater to the masses of Minnesota Vikings fans in the general area. Who said we're not above schmoozy marketing techniques?

But this being a democratic non-pool, we are asking for your input into what colors the 2008 'Ganza shirt should be. Keep in mind that only the Pooh-Bah has the final vote! But we are not above patronizing you into thinking your comments are valuable!

As the teams begin their conference play, we thought it would be a good time to compare how Director Bill is doing in his predictions. Afterall, he is very highly paid and needs to be held accountable for his blog posts...

Not much of a surprise, your favorite Ganza Brass is the incomparable Benevolent Grand Pooh-bah. We at Brass HQ are proud of our fearless leader, and it seems that you prognosticators are too. The Director had a whopping 6 votes whilst the Deputy had 1 vote. We look at things through rose colored glasses here at the Ganza hq, and assume that 1 vote is representative of the Deputy being number 1 in our book. Way to go Deputy Dan.

Well, in college hoops news the Div II Gardener Webb Dawgs pounded the #20 Kentucky Wildcats in a stunner. I don't know about you but if that keeps up the KU Wildcats aren't getting passed round 1 for me. My beloved Gonzaga Bulldogs are off to a good start and are deep, look out elite 8.

Hey Ganza-nistas,

Its the director here generating some pre-ganza excitement. This new installment to the Ganza offers you a chance to "throw down" some predictions even before you fill out your bracket. In a closed door meeting, I asked the Pooh-bah (the deputy was out eating chocolate chip cookies and trying to get in his last few rounds of golf before the winter snows fly) if I could write up a little article about the upcoming College hoops season, I outlined what I was going to say and waited for his response. It went a little like this.

me - "Hey Pooh-bah, I'm writing this article."

Pooh - "hmm, what?"

me - "I know its only November, but I miss the Ganza and I am starting to get excited."

Pooh - "Ganza? What are you talking about?"

me - "you know, the premier prediection college hoops tourney...this ain't no pool? Ring any bells?"

Pooh - "huh? I am sleeping for the winter."

me - "thanks Pooh, what a boss you are!"
